Outside
Published in Paperback by Avenue B (July, 1994)
Average review score:

from a real poetI discovered this book a short while back and went on to find others by Baron. This is poetry in its real form--the poem. Not linear--not narrative--but "abut" language and cognitive resources. It's beautiful and lyric and thoughftul and wonderous. I didn't know poets were still working in this manner.

Patented American sawsets : an illustrated patent directory, 1812-1925
Published in Unknown Binding by Osage Press ()
Average review score:

Great articles and patent info - the best book on sawsets! This is the best book on saw sets available to date, and should be in the library of anyone interested in saw tools. Mr. Friberg has written an excellent series of articles at the begining of his book outlining the differences in the saw sets one is likely to encounter. Many of the illustrations are taken from his extensive collection of period documentation and are unavailable anywhere else. The patent documentation is the result of years of research and provides invaluable research material for identifying an unusual tool or learning more about one you already know something about. The patent names, dates and numbers are sorted several ways to allow one to search by either of these marks, which greatly helps narrow down a search. The body of the book includes the first page of the patent illustrations, which helps to identify a tool by shape, or to merely review the vast array of saw sets which were patented. This book would interest anyone who likes saw tools, an under-appreciated category which is quickly growing as an important segment of tool collecting.

Great book for anyone that wants to know about the other proleague. This book has a lot of information about the American Basketball League(ABL), the other women's pro basketball league. One problem is that there isn't enough information about teams and players from the east coast. The ABL rules!!

The President's Wife: Mary Todd Lincoln; A Biography.
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (June, 1973)
Average review score:

The President's Wife: Mary Todd Lincoln; A BiographyI found this novel about Mary Lincoln to be an informative biography about a very misunderstood historical lady. Mrs. Lincoln's behavior would not have been questioned in the present day. She was an eccentric, ambitious, intelligent woman who very obviously supported her husband's rise to the Presidency and believed in the preservation of the Union. Mrs. Lincoln suffered through illnesses, slander and gossip and unimaginable tragedies while in Springfield and in Washington during the Civil War. Then with President Lincoln's assination she was expected to live in a world where she no longer had her greatest supporter and protector. Mary Lincoln was a lady born before her time; in modern day her intelligence and drive would have been respected. Ishbel Ross' use of historical documentation of Mary Lincoln's life to describe the life of this amazing, intelligent and many times erratic woman shows much research on the subject.

Research Techniques in Animal Ecology
Published in Hardcover by Columbia University Press (15 January, 2000)
Average review score:

Very useful information for ecology studentsThis edited volume is comprised of 11 chapters that deal with a variety of the methods used to obtain and analyze ecological data pertaining to animals. Because each chapter is written by a different author, the chapters vary in style and level of detail. The book starts with a very broad treatment of hypothesis testing and then proceeds to outline such techniques as marking vertebrates for mark-recapture studies, calculating home range size, measuring habitat selection and use, assessing vertebrate food habits and diet, measuring population sizes (a chapter I would have placed earlier in the book), detecting density dependent population change, modeling predator-prey dynamics, performing population viability analysis, measuring animal behaviors, and modeling species distributions using a Geographic Information System. The chapters on habitat selection and PVA were especially well-written. The book differs from Krebs' classic "Ecological Methodology" in that it spends far less time on statistical modeling and far more time reviewing the pros and cons of technqiues that are found in every ecologist's toolbox.
The book has a distinctly vertebrate bias, making it not as useful as one might hope for those biologists like myself who study the other 99% of Kingdom Animalia. Even so, however, some of the techniques are directly transferrable to studies on invertebrates (and plants as well).
The book is written at the level of advanced undergraduates or graduate students, but even seasoned professionals will appreciate the book when they are brushing up on familiar methods or trying to learn new ones.

Enjoyable hoop dreamTodd Walton's second urban youth makes good story (published 18 years after Inside Moves). This is an enjoyable read and well flowing story about a natural basketball player stuck in the urban asphalt leagues, his relationship with a down and out sportswriter and how they each mentor the other to aspire to the heights of their potentials.
If you enjoy sports fiction, with a touch of humor you'll enjoy this book.
